Old Posterous Blog

These blog postings were imported from the Posterous service before Posterous closed down. Posterous was acquired by Twitter in February 2013.

A new blog service has come on the scene, Posthaven. The developers are the same as those that started Posterous. Their promise for Posthaven? "Websites come and go. This one is made to last forever."

Casting of an ant colony

Arie Korporaal March 9, 2012

Dr. Walter Tschinkel of Florida State University spoke to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park volunteers about his research on fire ants. Part of his discussion incuded his field work on territorialism in ants as well as making casts of abandoned ant nests.  He pours molten zinc into abandoned ant nests and makes metal castings of the subterranean architecture. These two photos are the castings of two different species of ants.
